Sanchaypatra questions and answers

Clear answers about slabs, rate locking, tax, eligibility, early encashment and how the numbers on this site are worked out.

Last updated 24 Oct 2026

How much source tax is cut from my profit?

5% of the profit if your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes is up to ৳5 lakh, and 10% above that. Pensioner Sanchaypatra has no source tax up to ৳5 lakh.

From the FY2026-27 budget, the tax withheld counts as advance tax that you can adjust in your annual return.

What happens if I cash out early?

You get a lower, year-based rate instead of the maturity rate — for example 9.74% after one year on the 5-year certificate (up to ৳7.5 lakh).

If you have already received profit at the higher rate, the difference is deducted from your principal. Cashing out before the first year ends earns no profit.

Who can buy Paribar Sanchaypatra?

Bangladeshi women aged 18 or over, people with disabilities, and anyone aged 65 or over. It can only be bought in a single name, up to ৳45 lakh.

When do I need an e-TIN and proof of return submission (PSR)?

For purchases above ৳10 lakh. Up to that amount you can buy without showing a tax return (the rule since the FY2025-26 budget).

How does the rate slab work?

The slab is decided by your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes, including the purchase you are making. At present, a total of ৳7.5 lakh or less gets the first-slab rate and a total above ৳7.5 lakh gets the second-slab rate.

The whole certificate earns the rate of its slab. It is not split, so the first ৳7.5 lakh is not rated separately from the rest of the total.

Does my rate change after I buy?

No. The rate in force on the purchase date is locked for the whole tenure of that certificate. When the government revises rates later, only certificates bought after the change get the new rates.

That is why this site keeps every past rate set: a certificate bought in an earlier period is still calculated at the rates of that day.

How often are rates revised, and what changed recently?

Rates are normally reviewed every January and July. From 1 Jan 2025 the three slabs became two and rates rose; from 1 Jul 2025 they were cut. A further cut announced on 30 December 2025 was suspended on 4 January 2026, and on 2 July 2026 the Finance Division kept the July 2025 rates for Jul–Dec 2026.

The rates page lists every revision with its source.

When is profit paid?

It depends on the scheme. Paribar and Pensioner pay every month, the 3-month profit-based certificate pays every 3 months, and the 5-year certificate and the Post Office fixed deposit pay everything at maturity.

The calculator counts payout dates from your purchase date. The office's own schedule may differ by a few days, so use the dates as a guide.

Can I name a nominee, and what happens if the buyer dies?

Yes. You can appoint a nominee when you buy, and for most schemes you can change the nomination later. If the buyer dies, the nominee can encash the certificate straight away or, for schemes that pay regularly, keep receiving the profit until maturity.

Bring photographs of the nominee when you buy.

Can I buy in a joint name?

The 5-year certificate, the 3-month certificate and the Post Office fixed deposit can be bought in joint names, with a higher ceiling than a single name. Paribar and Pensioner can only be bought in a single name.

How much can I invest in each scheme?

The ceilings for one person are ৳30 lakh for the 5-year certificate, ৳30 lakh for the 3-month certificate, ৳45 lakh for Paribar, ৳50 lakh for Pensioner and ৳10 lakh for the Post Office fixed deposit. Joint ceilings are ৳60 lakh, ৳60 lakh and ৳20 lakh for the three schemes that allow joint names.

The 5-year, 3-month and Paribar schemes together may not exceed ৳50 lakh for one person or ৳1 crore in joint names.

Who can buy Pensioner Sanchaypatra?

Retired employees of the government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions, retired judges of the Supreme Court, retired members of the armed forces, and the spouse or child of a deceased employee who receives the family pension. It is bought in a single name.

What if I encash in the first year?

You get your principal back but earn no profit, because early encashment rates start only after the first full year. For schemes that pay profit regularly, any profit already received is deducted from the principal.

Waiting until the first year is complete changes the outcome a lot, so check the early encashment table before you decide.

How does this calculator work out my profit?

It picks the rate set in force on your purchase date, the slab from your total holding and the tax rate from the same total. Schemes that pay at maturity earn simple profit at the yearly rate for each year; schemes that pay regularly pay the yearly rate in equal instalments, with tax taken from each. Early encashment uses the rate for the completed years and deducts excess profit from the principal.

Why might the calculator differ from the office?

The calculator gives an estimate. Differences can come from the exact payout dates, rounding, a rate or tax rule that has changed since this site was last updated, how the office treats your total holding, or how a particular branch handles early encashment.

The office's figure is the final one. If the difference is large, ask the office to explain how it was worked out.
