Overview
The 5-year Bangladesh Sanchaypatra has been sold since 1977. You pay the face value when you buy, the certificate runs for 5 years, and at maturity you receive your principal and all the profit together. No profit is paid in between.
Because the profit is not paid out along the way, it is calculated as simple profit on the original amount at the yearly rate, for each year of the term. This makes it a good fit for money you will not need until the end of the term.
Who can buy it
- Any Bangladeshi citizen, men and women alike.
- It can be bought in a single name or in joint names.
- Certain institutions can also buy it, such as recognised provident funds and registered shelters for orphans, the destitute and the elderly, under the conditions in the scheme sheet.
Profit rates and slabs
The rates below are for certificates bought from 1 Jul 2025, the rates the government has kept in force for Jul–Dec 2026. Your rate is fixed on the day you buy and does not change during the 5-year term.
Which of the two rates you get depends on your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes, including this purchase: ৳7.5 lakh or less is the first slab, above ৳7.5 lakh the second. The whole certificate earns the rate of its slab.
| Scheme | Up to ৳7.5 lakh | Above ৳7.5 lakh |
|---|---|---|
| 5-Year | 11.83% | 11.80% |
How and when profit is paid
Nothing is paid until the certificate matures after 5 years. At that point you receive the principal plus the profit for the full term, less source tax.
If you want regular income rather than a lump sum, the Paribar, Pensioner and 3-month schemes pay during the term, but they have their own eligibility rules.
Denominations and ceilings
- Certificates come in many face values, starting from ৳10, so your purchase should be a multiple of ৳10.
- One person can hold up to ৳30 lakh, or ৳60 lakh in joint names.
- Holdings of this scheme, the 3-month scheme and Paribar count together toward a combined ceiling of ৳50 lakh for one person and ৳1 crore in joint names.
Encashing before maturity
You can encash before maturity, but the profit is paid at the early rate for the number of full years you have completed, and nothing is earned if you encash in the first year.
Since this scheme pays no profit along the way, there is nothing to deduct: you receive the principal plus profit at the early rate. The table shows the early rate for each completed year.
| Cash out after | Up to ৳7.5 lakh | Above ৳7.5 lakh |
|---|---|---|
| After 1 year | 9.74% | 9.72% |
| After 2 years | 10.21% | 10.19% |
| After 3 years | 10.72% | 10.70% |
| After 4 years | 11.26% | 11.23% |
Tax on the profit
Because all the profit arrives at maturity, the whole tax is deducted at that time.
Source tax is deducted from the profit before you receive it: 5% if your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes is ৳5 lakh or less, and 10% if it is above. The rate depends on your total holding, not on this certificate alone.
From the FY2026-27 budget the tax withheld counts as advance tax you can adjust in your annual return. Reports differ on whether the small-holder rate changes, so the calculator uses the NBR's published 5% and 10% rule. See the tax and rules page for details.
Worked examples
These examples use the rates in force today and assume the certificate is your only Sanchaypatra holding, so the slab and the tax rate follow the amount invested. They show how the slab and the tax rate change the result.
They are estimates for illustration. Your own result depends on your total holding and purchase date, and you can try your numbers in the calculator.
| Invested | Yearly rate | Source tax | Total net profit | Total received at maturity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ৳1,00,000 | 11.83% | 5% | ৳56,193 | ৳1,56,193 |
| ৳10,00,000 | 11.80% | 10% | ৳5,31,000 | ৳15,31,000 |
Profit is paid once, together with the principal, when the certificate matures.
Documents you need
- Passport-size photographs of the buyer
- National ID card (NID) of the buyer
- Passport-size photographs of the nominee, if you appoint one, and the nominee's details
- Bank account details, so profit can be credited to your account
- An e-TIN and proof of income tax return submission (PSR) if you are buying more than ৳10 lakh
Where to buy and encash
You can buy and encash this certificate at district savings offices and National Savings Bureau offices, Bangladesh Bank offices, scheduled commercial banks and post offices. Ask the office for its current forms and process, since procedures can differ between branches.
Nominee and other benefits
- You can appoint a nominee when you buy.
- If the buyer dies, the nominee can encash the certificate straight away or wait until it matures.
Is it right for you?
This certificate suits savers who do not need income during the term and who want the simplicity of one payment at the end. Its drawback is liquidity: encashing early costs you the higher rate, and nothing is earned in the first year.
If your total holding is near the slab limit of ৳7.5 lakh, check how the extra purchase changes your rate on the compare page before buying.
