Overview

The 3-month profit-based Sanchaypatra, introduced in 1998, pays profit every 3 months instead of at the end. The certificate runs for 3 years, and the principal is returned at maturity.

That makes four payments a year, which suits people who want a steady quarterly income, or who want to move the profit elsewhere at regular intervals.

Who can buy it

  • Any Bangladeshi citizen, men and women alike.
  • It can be bought in a single name or in joint names.
  • The same institutions that can buy the 5-year certificate may also buy this one, under the conditions in the scheme sheet.

Profit rates and slabs

The rates below are for certificates bought from 1 Jul 2025, the rates the government has kept in force for Jul–Dec 2026. Your rate is fixed on the day you buy and does not change during the 3-year term.

Which of the two rates you get depends on your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes, including this purchase: ৳7.5 lakh or less is the first slab, above ৳7.5 lakh the second. The whole certificate earns the rate of its slab.

How and when profit is paid

Profit is paid every 3 months. Each payment is one quarter of the yearly profit, less source tax, and the principal comes back with the last payment.

The issuing office can arrange automatic reinvestment of the certificate if you ask before maturity, so the money continues to earn without you collecting it.

Denominations and ceilings

  • Certificates are issued in large face values, so purchases are multiples of ৳1 lakh.
  • One person can hold up to ৳30 lakh, or ৳60 lakh in joint names.
  • Holdings of this scheme, the 5-year scheme and Paribar count together toward a combined ceiling of ৳50 lakh for one person and ৳1 crore in joint names.

Encashing before maturity

You can encash before maturity, but the rate drops to the early rate for the number of full years you have completed, and nothing is earned if you encash in the first year.

Because profit has been paid to you at the full rate along the way, any profit above what the early rate allows is deducted from your principal. The table shows the early rate for each completed year.

Tax on the profit

Tax is deducted from every quarterly payment, so the amount you receive each time is already net of tax.

Source tax is deducted from the profit before you receive it: 5% if your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes is ৳5 lakh or less, and 10% if it is above. The rate depends on your total holding, not on this certificate alone.

From the FY2026-27 budget the tax withheld counts as advance tax you can adjust in your annual return. Reports differ on whether the small-holder rate changes, so the calculator uses the NBR's published 5% and 10% rule. See the tax and rules page for details.

Worked examples

These examples use the rates in force today and assume the certificate is your only Sanchaypatra holding, so the slab and the tax rate follow the amount invested. They show how the slab and the tax rate change the result.

They are estimates for illustration. Your own result depends on your total holding and purchase date, and you can try your numbers in the calculator.

Documents you need

  • Passport-size photographs of the buyer
  • National ID card (NID) of the buyer
  • Passport-size photographs of the nominee, if you appoint one, and the nominee's details
  • Bank account details, so profit can be credited to your account
  • An e-TIN and proof of income tax return submission (PSR) if you are buying more than ৳10 lakh

Where to buy and encash

You can buy and encash this certificate at district savings offices and National Savings Bureau offices, Bangladesh Bank offices, scheduled commercial banks and post offices. Ask the office for its current forms and process, since procedures can differ between branches.

Nominee and other benefits

  • You can appoint a nominee when you buy.
  • If the buyer dies, the nominee can encash the certificate immediately or keep receiving the quarterly profit until it matures.
  • Automatic reinvestment is available on request through the issuing office before maturity.

Is it right for you?

This scheme fits someone who wants regular income without the eligibility limits of Paribar or Pensioner. Compare the after-tax return with the 5-year certificate: paying profit earlier is convenient, but only worthwhile if you actually use or reinvest the payments.

The face values are large, so it is less suited to small, gradual savings.
