Overview

Pensioner Sanchaypatra, introduced in 2004, pays profit every month for 5 years and returns the principal at maturity. Its distinctive feature is that there is no source tax while your total holding is within ৳5 lakh.

It is reserved for retired government servants and a few related groups, and it is bought in a single name.

Who can buy it

  • Retired officers and employees of the government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions.
  • Retired judges of the Supreme Court.
  • Retired members of the armed forces.
  • The husband, wife or child of a deceased employee who receives the family pension.
  • It cannot be bought in joint names.

Profit rates and slabs

The rates below are for certificates bought from 1 Jul 2025, the rates the government has kept in force for Jul–Dec 2026. Your rate is fixed on the day you buy and does not change during the 5-year term.

Which of the two rates you get depends on your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes, including this purchase: ৳7.5 lakh or less is the first slab, above ৳7.5 lakh the second. The whole certificate earns the rate of its slab.

How and when profit is paid

Profit is paid every month. Each payment is one twelfth of the yearly profit, less any source tax, and the principal is returned at maturity.

If you encash early, profit you have already received above the early rate is taken back from the principal.

Denominations and ceilings

  • Certificates come in face values starting from ৳50,000, so purchases are multiples of ৳50,000.
  • The ceiling is ৳50 lakh in a single name. The scheme sheet ties it to the gratuity and provident fund money you have received, so the amount you can invest also depends on those benefits.
  • The scheme sheets do not say whether this scheme counts toward the combined ceiling for the 5-year, 3-month and Paribar schemes, so this site does not count it.

Encashing before maturity

You can encash before maturity, but the rate drops to the early rate for the number of full years you have completed, and nothing is earned if you encash in the first year.

Because profit has been paid to you at the full rate along the way, any profit above what the early rate allows is deducted from your principal. The table shows the early rate for each completed year.

Tax on the profit

No source tax is deducted on the profit of this scheme while your total Sanchaypatra investment is ৳5 lakh or less. Above that, 10% is deducted.

The exemption is judged against your total holding, including other Sanchaypatra, not this certificate on its own.

Source tax is deducted from the profit before you receive it: 5% if your total Sanchaypatra holding across all schemes is ৳5 lakh or less, and 10% if it is above. The rate depends on your total holding, not on this certificate alone.

From the FY2026-27 budget the tax withheld counts as advance tax you can adjust in your annual return. Reports differ on whether the small-holder rate changes, so the calculator uses the NBR's published 5% and 10% rule. See the tax and rules page for details.

Worked examples

These examples use the rates in force today and assume the certificate is your only Sanchaypatra holding, so the slab and the tax rate follow the amount invested. They show how the slab and the tax rate change the result.

They are estimates for illustration. Your own result depends on your total holding and purchase date, and you can try your numbers in the calculator.

Documents you need

  • Passport-size photographs of the buyer
  • National ID card (NID) of the buyer
  • Passport-size photographs of the nominee, if you appoint one, and the nominee's details
  • Bank account details, so profit can be credited to your account
  • An e-TIN and proof of income tax return submission (PSR) if you are buying more than ৳10 lakh

Where to buy and encash

You can buy and encash this certificate at district savings offices and National Savings Bureau offices, Bangladesh Bank offices, scheduled commercial banks and post offices. Ask the office for its current forms and process, since procedures can differ between branches.

Nominee and other benefits

  • You can appoint a nominee when you buy.
  • If the buyer dies, the nominee can encash the certificate immediately or wait until it matures.

Is it right for you?

For an eligible retiree with a total holding within ৳5 lakh, this is the most tax-efficient scheme, since the whole profit is kept. Above that amount the 10% tax applies and the advantage narrows.

The issuing office decides eligibility and may ask for proof of your retirement or family pension, so ask them for the exact documents.
